Wednesday, 12-30-2009

1.  Mom took the kids from about 9:30 until about 3:00...  So...

2.  Susan and I went to Borders for a couple hours (I worked, she read), popped into a few shops in the mall by mom's house, and ate lunch at Houlihans (Susan scribed a recipe for blueberry martinis).

3.  Susan took a nap.

4.  Played Team Fortress 2 and tried to become a master of the Pyro.

5.  Played Dragon Age:  Origins.

6.  Susan bought ingredients for blueberry martinis.  We had a couple and ended the night pretty drunkenly.
7. Sophia has begun calling herself "grandpa John" and refuses to answer to Sophia. She even woke up in the middle of the night and insisted that she was "grandpa John"

1.   Susan went to the gym in the morning before I went to work.

2.  I worked at the book store for a couple hours and bought a 100-CD case for the remaining, loose CDs in my collection.

3.  Played in the snow with the kids.  Rainer tried to shovel the driveway with his new shovel.

4.  Played some Trine.

5.  Watched some Desperate Housewives.

Monday, 12-28-2009

1.  Reorganized (i.e., purged) my video game / CD / DVD area...  Threw away approximately 20 lbs of:  CDs, DVDs, jewel cases, and old video game boxes.

2.  Jessica went to Target with Susan and the kids and then came back to the house to hang out for the day.

3.  Susan and the kids went over to Susan's parents' house because some of her family from Kentucky was in town.  I worked... Until 5:00, that is.  Then, it was Dragon Age:  Origins.

4.  Took a bath and read another story out of the Elric book.

5.  Watched a couple episodes of Desperate Housewives.

6.  Played a level of Trine.

Sunday, 12-27-2009

1.  Post-christmas cleaning occurred for most of the day...  Make that almost all of the day.

2.  In the evening, we bottled (and corked with the new corker) Hard Cider Batch 3.  It's hard to explain how it tastes because it's not like any cider I've had.  Batch 1 was like woodchuck, batch 2 was like Strongbow, but this one is... Different.  It apple-y and sweet, it's clear with a rich, orange-ish-gold color.  I think it's the best of the three.

3.  Watched Desperate Housewives.

4.  Played some Trine.

Saturday, 12-26-2009

1.  Post-christmas cleaning occurred most of the day.

2.  We took the kids to the bookstore.  They played with trains and read books.  Renee (friend Renee, not grandma Renee) introduced us to Pirate's Night Before Christmas.  It was good (and half off) so we bought it.

3.  Drove down to Glendale (the former mall turned shopping district) so Susan could return some stuff.

4.  Picked Jessica up on the way home, she ate dinner with us.

5.  Jessica sat the house (is that proper?) so Susan and I could go out on a date.

6.  Date included book store (at which Susan bought several books and I read Elric) followed by drinking at Applebees.

Friday, 12-25-2009

1.  Woke up and unwrapped presents promptly at  7:30.  Rainer received a Susan-made doll.  Sophia got play silks.  They both received the Train Table 2.0, it was a pretty major hit.

2.  Susan and I frantically cooked and cleaned, respectively.

3.  Susan's parents, mom, Jessica, Christopher, Halie, and Cooper came over around 9:30 for a Susan-prepared brunch.

4.  Susan and her parents had a heated, emotional argument/discussion about memories of Susan as a kid.  It was awkward, so Rainer and I played with cashews he had ground in his new hand blender.  They became:  mulch, logs for a cabin, rocks, and finally compost.

5.  Everyone left and we had some time to relax.

6.  Sophia claimed that she was going to get a motorcycle and a nose ring.  I'll have to keep an eye on her.

7.  We took the long (i.e., 2 minute) drive to Christopher and Halie's house for homemade pizza, beer, and cookies.  Spent the afternoon over there hanging out.

8.  After we put the kids to bed, Susan and I spaced out for about two hours and went to bed at 8:45.

Thursday, 12-24-2009

1.  Susan and I spent a bunch of time in the morning cleaning and otherwise preparing for Christmas.

2.  After Sophia's nap, we went over to Susan's parents' house for Christmas Eve celebrations.  There was eating, drinking (homemade mead), and opening presents.  Sophie got butterfly wings, which she wore around for the evening.  Rainer got a hand blender in which he made a rather pungent combination of items:  carrots, almonds, and pickles.  I received an orange bathrobe that I have not dared to try on yet.

3.  We got the kids to bed an hour late and they passed out.

4.  We spent the evening gluing Rainer and Sophia's new and improved train track to the newly painted and redesigned train table.

5.  Susan finished Rainer's doll, I wrapped presents, and we managed to sneak an episode of Desperate Housewives in.

Wednesday, 12-23-2009

1.  Jennifer was over for the morning, hanging out, playing with the kids, etc..

2.  My boss made me stop working early so I could go enjoy Christmas.  So, we went over to mom and Jessica's house to hang out.

3.  Since mom was going out with David for the evening, Jessica came back to our house for a homemade chili dinner.

4.  Jessica, Susan, and I watched Desperate Housewives.

5.  I passed out on the couch.

6.  Jessica and Susan watched some Adam Sandler movie, Bedtime Stories, and mom picked Jessica up around midnight.

Tuesday, 12-22-2009

1.  Jennifer Canada and her parents came over in the afternoon.  Her parents left after 20 minutes or so.  Jennifer spent the night.

2.  Had a tasting of Cider batch 3.  It's hard to describe, but it's yummy.  Between the three of us, we drank 1/3 gallon of it.

3.  Susan and Jennifer went over to my mom's house to pick up a knitted circle for a doll Susan was making.  They stayed until 11-ish.  I played Dragon Age:  Origins.

4.  I went to bed, Susan and Jennifer stayed up chatting until after midnight.

Monday, 12-21-2009

1.  Played in the snow with the kids before work.  Rainer shoveled the driveway with his new shovel from grandma Renee.

2.  Susan and Rainer made gingerbread cookies.  We took some over to Bonnie.

3.  Nathan came over in the afternoon.  We sat around, drank mead, played in the snow for a while, and talked about video games (some other stuff, too, but mostly video games).

4.  Watched Desperate Housewives with Susan after the kids were in bed.

Sunday - 12-20-2009

1.  It snowed about an inch.  We went out and had an extended snowball fight and built snowmen.   Sophia destroyed snowmen mercilessly.  Dad and Jessica came over to join the fray after a while.

2.  Jessica ended up hanging out at our house for the morning and early afternoon because Rainer didn't want her to leave.  She and Rainer watched Bob the Builder on the couch.

3.  Susan wasn't feeling so hot, so she had some vodka and rum and passed out on the couch.

4.  After Sophia's nap, we had Christmas (more like solstice since it was 12-20) at grandma Renee's house.  Lots of food and lots of presents.  Susan had a mild hangover and Christopher was impressed.

5.  I played Dragon Age most of the evening.

Saturday, 12-19-2009

1.  Had Santa's White Christmas coffee (Susan picked 5 packs of it up at Office Depot the day before)...  It's coconut-y, somewhat vanilla-y, and pretty tasty overall.  It's somewhat murky, though, and I'm not sure about the white residue it leaves on the filter.

2.  Dad and Sheila came over in the morning to hang out / play with the kids.

3.  Dad, Sheila, Jessica, Christopher, Halie, and Cooper trekked down to Conner Prairie for a free, christmas-y celebration.  We ate at Cici's pizza afterward.

4.  Susan, the kids, and I hurried home after pizza because...

5.  Clarence came over to watch the kids from 1:30 - 6:00.  Susan and I actually got out while the kids were awake for the first time in I'm not sure I remember how long.

6.  Susan and I did some shopping, went to Broad Ripple for coffee & culture, and stopped by Barnes & Noble in Clearwater to sate our nerdiness.

7.  Watched some Desperate Housewives.

Friday, 12-19-2009

1.  Another rough day at work.  A white Russian almost made it better, but not quite.

2.  Feeling stretched too thin (especially since most of the people I know become extra demanding around the holidays and think I'm mentally unstable for not wanting to be involved), I started abandoning obligations.  Freelance work and an extra D&D campaign were first to go...

3.  Went Yule / Christmas / Festivus shopping for a while with Susan and the kids.

4.  Fortunately, Susan's dad came over to house sit so Susan and I could go out to the book store for a couple hours.

5. Rainer slept through the night without a diaper for the first time.

1.  Had a rough morning at work, so I treated myself to Penn Station for lunch.

2.  Worked at the bookstore for a while.

3.  Bought Susan's Christmas presents (can't list them here, she reads this thing).

4.  Played D&D with the Studio 301 crew.  Notable occurrences:  Lucan Varis was visited by the Spirit of Economics itself!  The spirit came to Lucan during a wine, scented candle, and bubble filled bath and sent him on a spirit quest:  kill the monsters in their lair to uphold the financial stability of the kingdom...  Unfortunately, Lucan didn't ask which monsters or where the lair was so the quest has become more difficult than was probably anticipated.

3.  Went to bed early.

Sunday, 12-13-2009

1.  Went to a Unitarian Universalist church to attend "service" and watch a retelling of the Christmas Story.  I still feel dirty inside, but I got out of paying $160 to attend the Yuletide Celebration downtown.  I think it's the first time I have "willingly" gone to anything resembling mass in... Um...  8 or 9 years.  I honestly can't say I have missed the experience, but $160 is a big savings, so it's a financial win at least.

2.  Christopher put a new battery in the Saturn so we could finally get the van in the garage for the winter.

3.  Took the kids to Uncle Bill's pet shop to check out the fish, birds, dogs, and cats...  I might file a report to my colleagues at the Humane Society regarding my findings.

4.  Ate lunch at Deep Indian Cuisine with mom and Jessica.

5.  Jessica hung out at our house for the afternoon.

6.  Drove the Saturn over to Christopher's so he can work on it, make it better, and sell it for some major cash (hopefully).

7.  Played Gyromancer.

8.  Watched "The Answer Man" with Susan.  It was a Netflix recommendation.  I thought it sucked, although I might have just been in a bad mood about #1.

Saturday, 12-12-2009

1.  Spent the morning cleaning, buying groceries, etc.

2.  Played at Susan's parent's house for the afternoon...  Were actually able to go inside for the first time in two months.

3.  Ate dinner at Bd's Mongolian BBQ in Clearwater.  The kids enjoyed watching the guys cook on the hot stone slab with sticks.

4.  Played Gyromancer.  Initial impressions:  lots of fun, but not as good as Puzzle Quest...  It really needs more non-combat minigame type activities (like item creation, spell research, mount training, etc.) like there were in Puzzle Quest.

5.  Played Dragon Age:  Origins.  Initial impressions:  incredible!  I think it's the best RPG of non-Bethesda type I've played in ages...

1.  Bought Gyromancer and Dragon Age:  Origins with birthday money.

2.  Couldn't play Gyromancer or Dragon Age:  Origins all day because I had meetings and couldn't play all night because...

3.  Susan threw me a surprise* birthday party!  We ate, drank, talked about gaming a lot, and were merry.

*Surprise = it was scheduled to be a surprise, but Susan wanted to invite some of my friends she didn't know how to contact so she had to let me in on the surprise early.

27th Birthday Edition.

1.  With the end of quarantine and quarantine-induced depression, I have resumed the ADD Hesch Blog.

2.  Took the day off work since it's my birthday.

3.  Went out to Kohl's (with the kids) and bought some new shoes (first time in 3 years).

4.  Ate lunch with mom at Deep Indian Cuisine.

5.  Mom came back and watched the kids for a couple hours so Susan and I could go to the bookstore.

6.  Christopher came over and tried to jump the Saturn (he's taking it, fixing it, and hoping to sell it eventually).

7.  After the kids were in bed, I played D&D with the Studio 301 crew until midnight-ish.

1.  Susan went to Zumba for the first time in a month!  Having not been without their mother, the childrens' world ended.  There was a great wailing and gnashing (and no I don't mean the Linux Flash player, oh ha ha!) of teeth.

2.  Did a bunch of D&D stuff.

3.  Started to worry that I might be becoming obsessed with D&D.

4.  Realized that if your wife is rolling a character next to you, it's not an obsession, it's bonding time.

Mental Status:  Varied

Stuck in a rut.  Activities most days include:  read about D&D stuff, worked on D&D stuff, watched tv (The Brothers Bloom, Desperate Housewives, IT Crowd, a little BSG), played video games, listened to TWiT during work.

1.  Susan and I had our anniversary on Thursday, 11-05.  I took the day off work (my first paid day off since last August when we moved back to Indiana).  Due to the quarantine, we stayed in.

2.  Friday, I downloaded and installed Linux (Ubuntu).

Swine Flu (H1N1) 2009 Quarantine, Day 8:
Mental Status:  Irritable (morning), okay (afternoon and evening)

1.  Went to Potter's Bridge park in the morning...  I had never actually been on a covered bridge before (at least I don't remember ever being on a covered bridge before).  I was surprised how similar the covered bridge in Creepy Hollow (in Dead Head Fred) looked to the real bridge.

2.  Susan painted most of the kitchen pink.

3.  Figured out a plan for D&D.

4.  Rainer dressed up as a dog, Sophie as a bumble bee, Susan as a Ren Faire attendee, and I as a tourist.  Since we're on quarantine, we couldn't actually knock door-to-door, but we did go on a masquerade walk.

5.  Watched The Brothers Bloom.

Swine Flu (H1N1) 2009 Quarantine, Day 5:
Mental Status:  Nervously energetic

1.  Susan and I bought each other an anniversary present in preparation for our anniversary next week:  a new coffee maker and a  burr grinder.

2.  Watched an hour or so of video tutorials for a D&D (or other RPG) mapping program that can support remote players.

3.  Played around with said mapping tool (simply called MapTool) for a while

4.  Successfully setup a server, had Susan connect via LAN and Nathan connect in from NC

Today's quarantine-inspired insight:  I should spend some time developing open source gaming software.

Addendum: We carved a pumpkin yesterday. Rainer dug out all the goop in the middle of the pumpkin. Sophie kept putting her spoon on the pumpkin, putting it in her mouth, and saying "Mmmmm! Soup!" I got a bulging welt on my arm when some of the pumpkin goop touched my arm... Apparently, I'm still allergic.

Swine Flu (H1N1) 2009 Quarantine, Day 3:
Mental Status:  Cabin-feverish

i.  So yeah, I forgot to mention that we're on quarantine.  Apparently, children are high risk for serious Swine-Flu-Related problems.  Apparently, children with seizures or other disorders (e.g., Rainer) are on the DO-NOT-LET-YOUR-CHILD-GET-SWINE-FLU-UNDER-ANY-CIRCUMSTANCE list.  Hence the quarantine.

1.  Susan and I got Swine Flu mist vaccines today...  Unfortunately, they take up to 14 days to really make sure you're immune.  So...  The quarantine is on for  a while.  Anyone have any good ideas for not going crazy while you're stuck in the house?

2.  Watched The Guild season 1.

3.  Played some X-Com UFO Defense

4.  Read some Pathinder

Today's quarantine-inspired insight: I should play WoW again.

3.  I cleaned the gutters and removed sticks from the roof.

4.  Susan uprooted a ton of shrubs.

5.  Found a bunch of maps for my D&D campaign on the Cartographer's Guild forums:  http://forum.cartographersguild.com/

2.  We had one of the trees in our front yard removed.  The tree people brought several large trucks, saws, and a little Bobcat excavator.  Rainer thought it was a great show!  All for the low, low price of $600.  :(  Oh well, at least we can use the hammock again without worrying about 300 lbs of dead limbs falling on us.

3.  Played some X-Com UFO Defense after the kids went to bed.

2.  Stayed up late optimizing Pathfinder character builds with Susan.  No, that's not a euphemism.  Yes, it's nerdy.  Yes, I am ashamed of myself.

2.  The kids woke Trathen and Justin up around 7:30.

3.  We all went to the Original Pancake House.

4.  Tried not to fall asleep most of the day.

5.  Started checking out Pathfinder (it's like D&D 3.75).  Decided to run the next part of Trees of Prophecy in Pathfinder instead of D&D 4e.

6.  After the kids went to bed, Susan and I crashed before 9:00.

Saturday, 10-10-2009

1.  Cleaned the house.  Trying to catch up from Susan being down and a crazy work week.

2.  Went to the Farmer's Market.  Bought supplies for Rory's going-away party, scheduled for 8:00 pm.

3.  Cleaned more.

4.  Justin and Trathen, neither of whom we have seen in years, showed up for the party around 5:00 pm.

5.  Bottled batch 2 of hard cider.  It's drier than the first batch (I used cider instead of juice and dry champagne yeast instead of sweet mead yeast).

6.  Rory, James, and Kapil came over between 8 and 9.  We drank, played A Game of Things, laughed until we cried (I did at least), and drank five bottles of home-brewed mead and hard cider.  A lot of the humor revolved around teddy bears made of placentas, three wolf moon shirts, and me having sex with Trathen.

7.  Went to bed at around 3:00 am.

1.  Tried to juggle working and watching the kids while Susan mended from her teeth removal.  Almost had a panic attack.

2.  The Internet went down for a couple hours, which set me behind and further increased my likelihood to have a panic attack.

3.  Finally got hired by HSU.  Levelled up from "Temp" to "Director of IT Services."

4.  Drank a celebratory bottle of home-brewed hard cider.

3.  Susan decided to make me a cape for Festivus so we looked at and purchased a cloak pattern.

5.  Played EVE.

4.  I'm going to compost you.

2.  I'm going to turn you into soup and eat you up.

Saturday, 9-12-2009

1.  Bought a jigsaw at the hardware store because Susan claimed it would "open the world of woodworking to us."  I'm not really sure what that means and she wouldn't elaborate.

2.  I created a grappling hook type of device that I threw into the tree, hooked around large dead branches, and pulled said branches out of said tree.  This took about an hour and I managed to remove quite a number of them. I acquired a few cuts and scrapes, the first in a while, and was reminded of how it feels to bleed.  It was kind of weird.

3.  Met mom and Jessica at the Greek Fest.  Ate saganaki, tzaziki, pita, rum balls, feta, olives, and galactobueroko (I think that's how you spell it).  Drank lemonade, water, and six types of Greek wine.  One of them tasted like figs, mom and I almost wretched...  So we gave it to Susan.  She actually claims to have loved the raisiny wine and thinks it would go well with gingerbread.

4.  Drove back to mom's house and ate dinner with her and Jessica.

5.  After we put the kids to bed, Susan and I cleaned the house.

6.  Susan started regretting that she was missing her 10-year high school reunion and went about an hour and a half late.  I stayed home, wrote a few blog posts (I was a few days behind), and went to bed early.

Friday, 9-11-2009

1.  Mom came over to eat dinner and house sit so Susan and I could go to one of two events:  a birthday party or her 10-year high school reunion pre-party at the Fox and Hound.  The reunion pre-party won.

2.  Since the party didn't start until 9:00, we went to Castleton mall to hang out for a while.  Stopped by Borders, drank coffee, read RPG books.  Walked the mall until 9:00.

3.  Drove to Fox and Hound.  Due to what I assume was a lack of organization, no one was in the designated area except us.  So, we left.

4.  Watched 9 at the theater, I found it... Disappointing.  I liked the visual style and the setting as much as I thought I would, but the plot was lacking.  It was an epic, but done in 90 minutes, which never goes well.  Lots of traveling, action, and grand scenery.  Almost no background exposition or character development.

Thursday, 9-10-2009

1.  Worked on my D&D character's background story.  It's a bit melodramatic, but I figured a change of pace was good after Professor Ray of Cake.

2.  Tried the first bottle of the latest batch of mead.  It's sweet and doesn't really have a bite like the first batch.  I'm getting closer to Bunratty mead, which is my favorite ever.

3.  Watched an episode of The Tudors with Susan.

4.  Went to bed early-ish.

Wednesday, 9-9-09

1.  Sophia had to go to the doctor for a tubes-in-ear follow-up appointment.  The doctor said she's fine.

2.  Erin, Stella, and Elliott came over to play for the day.

3.  Received our new coffee order from GroundsForChange.com.  The First Light decaf that we got was delicious.  Haven't tried the others yet.

4.  Played at Forest Park for a while.

5.  I got to go out in the evening and play D&D!  Lv 6 paladin (don't blame me, it was someone else's character).  Unfortunately for that player, I was accidentally bitten by a werewolf, by which I mean I saw a werewolf 60' away with Detect Evil, started yelling rude things at said werewolf, and taunted him into attacking me.  Hopefully Michael doesn't mind his paladin being afflicted with lycanthropy.

Tuesday, 9-7-2009

1.  Labelled all 21 of my bottles of mead so I know which bottle is from which batch.

2.  Watched an episode of the Tudors.

3.  Spent a couple hours working on my D&D character.  Final choice Elf Fighter 1, Soulknife 16 / Rogue 7, Assassin 10.  Battle concept: I'm dual wielding short swords (so I get 7 attacks per round), if I am flanking (or have improved invisibility cast since I'm an assassin), I do around 10d6 damage per hit.  With the 30 dexterity I have and Weapon Finesse, my bonus to hit is pretty impressive.  Now I just have to finalize the back story.

Labor Day -

1.  Worked, although I was at the book store...  Quite the vacation.

2.  Met some people with whom I am going to start playing D&D (3.5)!  Now I just have to roll up a lv 17 gestalt character...  I forgot how long pre-4e characters took to generate.

3.  Started planning my character.

4.  Rainer fell asleep around 8:00.  Vast improvement over Sunday.

5.  Watched an episode of the Tudors with Susan.

1.  Rearranged the house...  The most notable change is that Rainer and Sophia are now in the same room.

2.  Used the dolly to secure giant logs from our neighbor's house.

3.  Brewed hard cider, batch 1.  It's not from the Hirsch farm, but I wanted to use it as a trial run for when we get Hirsch cider later this month.

4.  Rainer was awake until 9:30, fabricating various excuses for why he couldn't stay in his bed.

Saturday, 9-5-2009

1.  Went garage-sailing (I'm an English major and it's definitely "sailing" like a boat, so don't argue).  Acquired: 2 home made children's desks, a bean bag chair, a flag, and a bunch of random boards for $14.65.  We ran into Susan's Waldorf Play Group leader and I had to BS about knowing about the stuff.

2.  Swiped a dolly from Susan's parent's house so that we could pilfer some pieces of a tree that was cut down across the street.

3  Bought an Ale Pail and a hyrdrometer in preparation for home brewing cider.

4.  When we got back home, our neighbor's grandson, Ian was out so Rainer played with him for a while.

5.  Watched two episodes of The Tudors and went to bed early (we stayed up late at Friday's party).

2.  Had said party.  We played The Game of Things and Apples to Apples.  Drank various hard ciders and wines.  Ate chocolate / cherry / wine cookies, buffalo chicken dip, and meats / cheeses.  Erin, Nick, Lee, Sam, Rory, and Kapil attended.  I lost horribly at both games.

2.  I went up to Mr. G's alcohol shop (I don't think that's what it's called, but I can't remember the name) and bought some Strongbow cider.  I'm testing all of the various ciders in preparation for brewing (which will hopefully be this weekend).

Word Map So Far

A word map of the blog that I created using Wordle:

http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/1080224/ADHD_BLog

Thursday, 8-27-2009

1.  Susan's dad came over to hang out and play for the morning.

2.  Sophia, with ill-gotten Cheerios in hand, spun around in the kitchen like a whirling dervish, giggling and falling over repeatedly.  I think she was trying to keep the Cheerios away from me.

3.  Rainer passed out while reading, when I found him, the book was laying on top of his face.  Susan took pictures, so they may be on Facebook in a few days.

4.  I stayed home with the kids and Susan went out to a Waldorf study/play group.  She met some really intense hippies from my understanding.  They apparently out-hippied her by a lot.

5.  Drank a couple beers (Killian's).

6.  Played Dawn of War 2, Gish, and Mr. Robot.

2.  Our new vacuum cleaner arrived.  It looks like some sort of contraption that should cause natural disasters rather than clean floors.

3.  Went out to eat a El' Camino.  I tried Dos Equis because I love the "Most Interesting Man in the World" videos and their web site. The beer itself was good, it reminds me a lot of Killian's Irish Red (currently my favorite beer).

4.  After the kids went to bed, I played Dawn of War 2 for a few hours and Susan painted.

Friday, 8-21-2009

1.  Susan's parents took Rainer to the state fair.  They took the train.  They did not "wrassle" greased pigs or eat fried Pepsi (fried Pepsi was really at the state fair this year, I don't know how you would fry Pepsi but whatever).

2.  Susan, Sophia, and I went to get Indian with mom, Jessica, Christopher, Halie, and Cooper.  Mom got me a new hat.  This new hat is much like my old hat...  But newer.

3.  We picked Rainer up after lunch.

4.  Susan convinced me to go with her to Allisonville Nursery to buy some plants.  We got rained out, but not before buying some shade-tolerant, arid soil loving, perennials.  No, I don't know what that means, but Susan and the nursery lady repeated it enough that it's stuck in my head.

5.  Played Dawn of War II for a couple hours.

Thursday, 8-20-2009

1.  Sophia got tubes in her ears.  She didn't seem to bothered by the whole thing, though.

2.  Played Dawn of War 2 for a few hours

3.  (note, this happened a couple days ago, but I forgot)Susan and I had a miniature D&D Fight Night.  I was trying to prove that a well-balanced party was more effective than a team of warlocks.

The fight:

White Dragon + 4 Orc minions vs. 4 Maldora Fatebearers

The results:

1 Maldora, dead
1 Maldora, almost dead
2 Maldoras, unharmed (mostly)

4 Orcs, dead
1 Dragon, intimidated into surrendering

Wednesday, 8-19-2009

1.  Downloaded, installed, and updated Dawn of War II (DoW2).

2.  Fought with Games for Windows - LIVE for a while so that I could get multiplayer working for DoW2.  I didn't like Games for Windows - LIVE before (when I encountered it within Fallout 3) and I like it even less now.  I did, however, eventually manage to add DoW2 to my account and sign in.

3.  Due to the time I spent fighting with Games for Windows - LIVE, I didn't actually have any time to play DoW2.

4.  Ordered out for pizza at Papa John's.

5.  Watched a couple episodes of Desperate Housewives with Susan.

1.  Immediately after the kids went to bed, I took a nap for an hour.  Susan woke me up around 8:30.

2.  Finally got a chance to finish watching Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog.  I thought it was pretty awesome, Susan thought it was pretty "meh."

3.  Went to bed early (9:30 ish).

2.  Went to Morris (Morse, something) Lake and played at the park.

3.  Went over to mom's place for dinner.  Christopher / Halie / Cooper, David, and Josh were there.

Gen Con 2009.

1.  Woke up early.  Packed.  Drove to Rory's place.  Arrived at Gen Con around 7:40 in preparation for our 8:00 am game.

2.  Rolled a Dragonborn Warlord named Guamerglax.  No one wanted to pronounce it, so I got called Bob the Dragon.  I decided that I love the Warlord.

3.  Ate lunch at Einstein Bagels, exhibition-halled it up, went to the Red Dragon Inn, return to exhibition hall, watched the costume parade, more exhibition hall, tried to watch a Shadowrun movie but it kept skipping so we left, ate dinner.

4.  Played an 8:00pm - Midnight-ish D&D game.  Ended with setting Rory's wagon on fire and ramming it into a goblin city.  Levelled up.  Went home.  Passed out around 1:30 am.

5.  Had dreams about being a wizard and running around in dungeons all night.

NC Trip 2009, Day 8:

1.  Packed the car up, said our goodbyes to the Joneses, and left.

2.  Stopped about 10 minutes after departing to get one final It's a Grind fix.  Wayne (our favorite barrister) was there and gave us a drink on the house.

3.  Drove, drove, drove.

4.  Stopped at Holiday Inn outside Lexington for the night.

5.  A couple memorable quotes came out of the drive:

"You make my life ironic and I'm not sure that I like it."
-Susan, to me.

"Looking at source code is like peeking at somebody's underwear."
-Susan, to me.

"Susan, I'm a programmer.  I get paid to look at web pages' underwear."
-Me, to Susan.

NC Trip 2009, Day 7:

1.  Worked in the morning.

2.  Hung out at Vicious Cycle for an hour or so in the afternoon, got to see / talk to / bother a bunch of people I hadn't seen in a while.

3.  Went to the Old Crow Medicine Show concert in the evening.  I hate North Carolina summers, it must have been 95-100 degrees and humid.  Regardless of the heat, the concert was fun.  Sophia went on a baby adventure, running all around the concert area and waving / smiling at people.  We met up with a British guy named Mick who is one of the only people I know who actually listened to epic metal before meeting me.

4.  Stayed up irresponsibly late talking and drinking at the Jones House.

NC Trip 2009, Day 6:

1.  During nap time, Susan let me go out to It's a Grind by myself to get some much-needed gaming in.  Sat by myself, drank coffee, played Crayon Physics, and ran into Stacy and family.

2.  When the kids woke up, we went back to the old apartments.  We saw our old neighbors, the playground, Jennifer / Kyle, and Nathan / Leslie / Trudy.  Both Rainer and Mackenzie remembered the complex and the playground.

3.  Jennifer C. made all of us dinner over at her apartment.

4.  Came back to the Jones house, put the kids to bed, talked a lot, watched Firefly, and went to bed late.

NC Trip 2009, Day 5:

1.  Bought 10 Indie games off of Steam for $30.  Susan snatched my computer to "check her email," but I found her playing Blueberry Garden.  I'm going to keep a closer eye on her computer use in the future...  Especially if fruit or gardens are involved.

2.  Hung out at the Jones house.

3.  Jennifer and Kyle came over in the afternoon to hang out for a while.  They left before dinner.

4.  Everyone abandoned me outside with the three kids, five random neighborhood kids, and a million mosquitoes for what felt like an eternity.  Susan says it was 10-15 minutes, but time is funny like that.  After a couple beers and a few hours to distance myself, I calmed down a bit and stopped expecting to die of a panic attack.

5.  Played a bit of Crayon Physics and Audiosurf.  Crayon Physics rocks, but I really need to get Blind Guardian and Avantasia on my computer before I can judge Audiosurf.

6.  Drank another beer after the kids went to bed, watched Firefly, and went to bed.

1.  Woke up and went to It's a Grind, our old coffee hangout in Cary.  James (the owner) and Wayne (the best baristos (I'm not sure if baristos is the right word) ever) were there and apparently forgot that we had moved to Indy.

2.  Hung out at the Jones house for the day.

3.  Jennifer and Kyle came over in the evening to hang out and talk.  They left around 11:00pm.

4.  Keith got home around 11:20pm, so we stayed up until after midnight talking.

4.  Arrived in NC around 3:30.  Picked up Mackenzie, went to the grocery, and hung out at the Jones'.

5.  Watched Wall-E (I'm not really sure how it's spelled)...  Must get a hover chair with a monitor.

NC Trip 2009, Day 1:

1.  Left our house at noon.  The rain was terrible and there were 65 MPH winds in Indy.  Fortunately, they stopped after about half an hour or so and it was smooth sailing (not literally) from there out.

2.  Stopped at DQ along the way for a mid-afternoon ice cream rush.

3.  Ate dinner at Cracker Barrel somewhere in the mountains.

4.  Stopped for the night in Beckley, WV at around 10:30 pm.  The kids, fortunately, didn't wake up too much when we transitioned them to the hotel room.

Professor Ray of Cake - Blog Entry 1

1.  The professor sent Cake of Justice into a stink pit.  Justice was ruined.  Cake swore vengeance against the dryad who owned the stink pit with a few choice words.

2.  Once the dryad was dead, PRoC baked a coffee cake using the dryad to fuel the fire.   After breakfast, he used Make Whole to "resurrect" Cake of Wrath (a red velvet cake).

3.  Professor Ray of Cake almost set a forest on fire because the party thought the forest was alive.

4.  PRoC almost set a bakery on fire because the owner sold cheesecake (an abomination in his eyes) and fruit cake.  Jack Deth bribed the guards into letting everyone go.

5.  Back at the tavern, PRoC hired a prostitute to have erotic conversations about cake.

2. Susan went to Zumba.

3. Bottled batch 2 of mead (yield: 12 bottles). Compared to batch 1, batch 2 is clearer and a lot less carbonated. I'm not sure how the alcohol content compares, but batch 2 shouldn't end up as strong.

4. Racked batch 3 of mead. Although it's only been fermenting for ~2 weeks, this one is strong. It'll probably be stronger than batch 1.

5. Played Overlord 2 for a couple hours.

I think she's now convinced that Moby Dick isn't about some dude going to kill a whale.

3. Rolled a Ranger on D&D Online.

4. Starting to think that I'm bored with the MMORPG genre.

1. Woke up at 6:00 am, exhausted. Let Susan sleep.

2. Took the kids on a walk.

3. Woke Susan up at 8:30 am. Went back to bed until 9:45.

4. Mom came over and house sat so that Susan and I could go to Barnes & Noble and Barley Island.

Friday, 6-26-2009

1. Bought a weed eater.

2. Susan's parents came over and watched the kids while Susan made a logo for her mom's volunteer group.

3. Susan's dad bought Susan the same weed eater and extension cord that we just bought (see #1).

4. Stayed up until 1:30 am and wrapped up the current D&D campaign's story arc. Taking a break until after Gen Con before starting part 2.

Thursday, 6-25-2009

1. Jessica, mom, Halie, and Cooper came over to hang out during the day.

2. Tried more of the GroundsForChange coffee. Forestal is really good. The New Guinea coffee is alright, but it's a bit on the weak side.

3. Sophia walked from the kitchen to the dining room and then to the family room with only Susan's finger on her back for extra confidence.

4. Ate dinner at Logan's Roadhouse with everyone mentioned above (and Christopher).

5. Worked on D&D stuff for tomorrow's meeting.

6. Preregistered for Gen Con!

Wednesday, 6-24-2009

1. Jacquie Carson Burrell and family came over for dinner and hung out.

2. Christopher, Halie, and Cooper came over after the kids were in bed.

Tuesday, 6-23-2009

1. Created a bunch of stat cards for Friday's D&D game.

2. Watched another episode of Merlin.

3. Rainer has "officially" been really nice to Sophia for two consecutive days (e.g., he apologized for hurting her without being prompted, included her in his games unprompted, etc.).

Monday, 6-22-2009

1. Wrote the Meeting 16 Adventure Log for Trees of Prophecy. Warning: unlike the blog, the adventure log is not ADD-friendly. http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/trees-of-prophecy/adventure-log

2. Watched a new show called Merlin. The first episode was interesting, I never thought I'd see Arthur as a high school jock / bully or Merlin as an angsty teenager.

Sunday, 6-21-2009

1. Since it was Father's Day, Susan let me sleep in... Unfortunately, because the children have beaten an early wake-up time into me, I couldn't manage to sleep past 7:30. When I got up, I found that Susan had made me a loaf of blueberry banana bread.

2. After the kids' naps, we went over to Susan's parents' house for dinner. The kids played outside with the bubble grill for over an hour.

3. Jennifer Canada spent the night at our house.

Saturday, 6-20-2009

1. I went to the park with Rainer. We saw some snorts (they're actually front loaders or something, but we call them "snorts" because of the "Are You My Mother?" book) in the parking lot. He sat in the scoop and got to touch the wheels and stuff, which is a first for him.

2. Jennifer Canada came over. She, Susan, and the kids went to the Strawberry Festival in downtown Noblesville. I stayed home and awaited party guests. Apparently, they do not actually sell strawberries at the Strawberry Festival, which was the only reason they went.

3. Susan's birthday party! Jennifer, Rory, Kapil, Christopher, Halie, Cooper, Chris McDonald and Brooke McDonald (Halie's mom and sister) attended. We grilled out burgers and hot dogs, had ice cream sundaes, and some booze.

4. Susan and I watched Death at a Funeral... It was a weird movie involving homoerotic love affairs with midgets, but seeing Hoban "Wash" Washburn (from Serenity / Firefly) whacked out of his mind on acid was pretty funny.

Friday, 6-19-2009

1. Went to an Irish pub in Fishers to hear some Kilt Rock. The music was good. I had a Killian's, which is now one of my favorite beers even though I drank way too many during Lee's bachelor party (see last Saturday). Susan had a Long Island Iced Tea and was totally drunk.

Thursday, 6-18-2009

1. Looked at about a hundred tattoos with Susan, passed out on the couch.

2. Went to bed early.

Wednesday, 6-17-2009

1. Had a groundsforchange.com coffee tasting party this morning with Susan, Halie, the kids, mom, and Jessica. We tried Espresso Blend (didn't make good coffee), Humane Society Blend (really good, light roast), and Nordic Blend (excellent dark roast, my favorite, although it is a bit smoky).

2. Talked to Keith Jones and he tried to convince me to take a trip to NC in August to hang out and go to the Old Crow Medicine Show concert... Considering it.

3. Watched Role Models with Susan. It was a good movie, but it had the unfortunate side effect of making me want to join a LARP group...

4. Played Mount & Blade for an hour and a half.

5. Saw Scribblenauts previews... Must figure out how to play it once it comes out.

Tuesday, 6-16-2009

1. Went over to Christopher & Halie's apartment to hang out after the kids were in bed. Held Cooper for a while.

2. Finally got to see Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard.

3. Watched Weeds: Season 5: Episode 1 with Susan. It gives me hope for the season (season 4 wasn't so hot).

Monday, 6/15/2009

1. Sophia will now take a few steps at a time on her own.

2. I received my 3 lbs of organic, shade-grown, fair trade, carbon free, etc., etc. etc. coffee from http://www.groundsforchange.com. So far, I've tried the Humane Society blend and it's pretty tasty... Looking forward to the Nordic Blend (it's a darker roast).

3. Rainer and Sophia actually played nicely together for about 20 minutes with the packing paper inside the coffee box.

4. Grilled out New York Strips... They were delicious!

5. I played about 3 hours of Mount & Blade.
